Brielle

“You’re back!” my cousin exclaims when I walk into the kitchen.

“Hey, Lilo.”

“How was lunch with Sienna?” I open my mouth to respond, but she lifts her hand up. “Wait! There's a lot to talk about. We can't do this without drugs.”

“Drugs?”

“I dropped by Sprinkles and bought their strawberry triple layer cake. Sugar is the must-have drug for a heart-to-heart between friends.”

“Ohhh!”

“I know, right?” she grins.

“In that case, drugs it is!”

“Brilliant!” she cheers. “Sit. I'll be back in a second,” she waves me over. “Tea?”

“Absolutely!”

While the water is boiling, my cousin walks to the refrigerator and comes back with a delicious looking cake.

“Strawberries and pound cake? What's there not to love?”

“Indeed. Our favorite,” she winks.

A few minutes later, Lilo is sitting across from me.

“Oh my God, I can never get over how amazing this cake is,” I say biting into the moist dessert.

“I could live off this alone,” Lilo laughs.

“Ditto.”

For the next few minutes, we savor our dessert in silence. Once we’re done, we wash it all down with strong British tea.

“That was phenomenal. Thank you,” I say.

“It was my pleasure. So, back to my original question, how was lunch with Sienna?”

I stop scraping my plate for the last few crumbs, drop my fork and meet my cousin’s piercing gaze. “Life can be so funny.”

“What do you mean?”

“It's been the three of us since we were twelve and we always promised each other that when we started seeing a guy, we’d tell each other everything—”

“Yikes.”

“Exactly. I can’t do that with Sienna. I can't tell her all the things I did with her older brother. As curious as she is, she's fully aware that she can't ask too many questions—that would be awkward and morally reprehensible.”

“Of course. Talk about too much information.”

“To answer your question, it was great seeing her again, but it was a little weird at times because we were both skirting around the issue. I'm just grateful that she seems to be genuinely happy for me.”

“She hasn’t stopped talking about it since she found out. And you're right, she's thrilled her brother found an amazing woman,” my cousin smiles wide. “You may not be able to tell her everything, but lucky for you I’m a great listener. What happened over the weekend, woman?”

I burst out in laughter. “How long have you been waiting to ask me that?”

“Well, you arrived late last night and you left before I did for your morning classes. The only reason I didn't bombard you with text messages while you were away is because I didn't want to distract you from your sexy weekend with your American lover.” She says that last part with a theatrical voice.

“You're too much.”

“Yeah, yeah, yeah. Start talking, cousin.”

“It was absolutely amazing, Lilo. Better than any of my fantasies. Easton is a wonderful man.”

“Details. I want details. Tell. Me. Everything.” She pounds on the table between each word. Plates, cutlery and cups rattle on the table. Her little outburst even causes our water to spill.

“Calm down, woman,” I scold.
